Peaceable Kingdom has five new Cooperative Games designed for kids to work together as a team to win jointly. These games are perfect for younger children just learning to play board games. We reviewed Peaceable Kingdom games last year. I love that they are quality no-batteries required games that encourage children to be imaginative and that focus on classic themes and designs and not on popular kids’ characters that can be somewhat of a fad (and let’s face it, annoying at times!)

Instead of “letting” a child win a game, or consoling a weeping younger child after they lose (again) to their older sibling, cooperative games force everyone to work together toward a common goal of beating the game.

My girls received Mermaid Island to test out and they played it as recent as this week with their grandmother. Not only is it a fun game, but like all Peaceable Kingdom games, it’s sturdily made and features beautiful, colorful artwork. Mermaid Island is designed for girls ages 5 and up so it was just a tad too juvenile for my 9-year-old, but my 6-year-old loves it! It retails for $14.99.

Peaceable Kingdom offers several fun games for kids. I love their fun take on classic card games, such as a pirate version of Crazy Eights. At $5.99, they’d make great stocking stuffers this Christmas!

Blurt! Word Race Game Giveaway

I’m really glad my 7-year-old is graduating to more challenging board games. You can only play Hi Ho Cherry-O so many times before threatening to flush those God-forsaken plastic cherries down the toilet. Family game night is a fun way to spend time with your kids and unplug from the TV or computer. Blurt! is a fun educational game I was sent to try out in honor of its 15th anniversary this year. It’s great for families and an excellent language-skill builder.

Blurt! is a fast-paced game for three to 12 players, although my 7-year-old and I have played it together, that requires no batteries (yea) and is very easy to learn. It includes 300 color coded two-sided cards with a total of 1,800 clues. One side is “easier” and one side is for older players. We’ve been playing the modified junior version for ages 7 to 9 and my 7-year-old loves it. I thought it might be a little too old for her, but I’ve been amazed at how well she is reading and also what a great way it is to help build her vocabulary. We’ve even been playing with our 4-year-old, although we have to give her extra clues.

Tim Walsh was inspired to invent Blurt! in 1990 after he came up with the concept in his wife’s 3rd grade classroom (actually they were just dating at the time and perhaps he wanted to impress her with his ability to entertain her students). The game has sold more than 1 million copies.

ZenBenders Game Review and Giveaway

Some of my favorite childhood play time memories involve sitting down and getting super competitive over a board game with my older brother (RISK, Monopoly, Clue, and Scrabble), so I love adding to our library of games for the girls.

At the BlissDom blog conference in Nashville back in February I learned about a game company I wasn’t familiar with: Out of the Box Games.

They sent us their ZenBenders sliding puzzle game to try out. I love this game because it is very small and self-contained, making it perfect for travel. I keep a busy bag/rainy day backpack at our house filled with portable activities and the ZenBenders game is perfect to toss in for a road trip or for a rainy day. ZenBenders has also been recognized by Dr. Toy with a Winner 100 Best Children’s Products award and a Major FUN Family Award from Deepfun.com. I love that their games are not affiliated with any popular cartoon characters or TV shows, meaning the marketing is just plain and simple fun.

With three different levels of difficulty and 36 different patterns, ZenBenders provides a fun challenge for players ages 8 to adult, although my girls age 6 ½ and 4 had fun recreating the patterns. (You can find rules for younger players ages 5-8 on the Out of the Box Games website.) Fair warning, though, this game does contain small pieces that could pose a choking hazard to young children so this is not appropriate for children under age 3.
