We reviewed LeapFrog’s Tag reading system last September (and I’m not surprised it’s received a Toy Of The Year Award for best educational boy) so I was excited to try out the new version for preschoolers, the Tag Junior. I’m a big fan of LeapFrog’s toys so I was curious to see how they’d revamped it for younger children ages 2 to 4.
A few things I noticed right off the bat. The Tag Junior is smaller and the “pen,” or book pal as LeapFrog calls it, has been redesigned for smaller hands not yet accustomed to holding a traditional pen or pencil. The books are smaller and are board books…no paper pages for eager hands to tear. LeapFrog has scaled everything down so that the system appeals and is appropriate for smaller children.
My 4-year-old loved having her “own” Tag reading system and immediately sat down to check out her new book, If I Were (which comes with the Tag system.)
From the LeapFrog website:
Parents can download audio for up to five books to the book pal, then let their toddlers explore. Each Tag Junior board book introduces a different preschool skill – such as the alphabet, counting or social play – through 24 playful activities and more than 130 audio responses. Open-ended questions and fun sound effects encourage children to take charge, as they touch any part of any page to bring words, pictures or activities to life. After their child has played, parents can connect the book pal to the online LeapFrog® Learning Path to see their child’s progress and get printable activities to expand the learning!
I was also pleased with the price, which is more reasonable than the Tag system (which runs about $49.99). The Tag Junior retails for $34.99 and that includes one book. Additional books are $10.99 and include a couple of classics like Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? from Dr. Seuss and Eric Carle’s Panda Bear Panda Bear What Do You See? The books also feature familiar characters such as Pooh and Dora.
The Tag Junior reading system would make a great Christmas present for your 2 to 4-year-old this year and it’s also great for children with older siblings starting kindergarten or first grade this fall. The Tag Junior is so much fun your child won’t realize they are developing their reading skills and love for books.
Now through October 1 you get free shipping when you buy the Tag Junior from LeapFrog’s website and use the promo code FSTAGJ9.
