We’re always on the lookout for good movies for our family movie night every Friday.
Having just returned from a day of first time surfing on Tybee Island in July, we were all really looking forward to watching Soul Surfer, released on DVD August 2. I love the positive message and the girls were completely fascinated by this true story of Bethany Hamilton, competitive surfer whose parents are life-long surfers who lost her arm in a shark attack at the age of 13. Bethany not only lived to tell her story, but she has used and is still using this life-changing accident to help others. The story takes place in Hawaii so the scenery is also beautiful. After her recovery, Bethany is anxious to get back up on a board as soon as she can and her perseverance and determination to continue competing are inspiring.
Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt (who I hadn’t seen in a movie in some time) play 13-year-old promising surfer Bethany’s encouraging parents and are great in their roles. Country music sensation Carrie Underwood also makes an acting appearance as Bethany’s church youth group leader. Bethany travels to Phuket, Thailand, to help aid tsunami victims with her youth leader as part of a volunteer group after her injury and the experience changes her perspective after she experiences a setback in competing. She returns to the surf competition scene stronger mentally than before and ready to compete.
This is a great movie with a positive, inspirational message and the perfect DVD for families to share together! Bethany is definitely a positive role model for young girls, which is very important to me as a mom to two girls ages 6 and 9, and her faith in God has helped give her strength and perspective in the face of adversity.
