We successfully survived the summer of no camps at our house but as the days went by I definitely found myself looking for fun, frugal ways to beat the heat.
Thinking outside the Arm & Hammer Baking Soda box doesn’t mean just using it to clean (although it’s fabulous for that purpose). You can also use it for a fun science experiment with your kids. Showing kids how ordinary household products and objects can be transformed into something else with a little ingenuity and imagination is a great way to encourage a love for learning.
Use baking soda and vinegar to create an awesome chemical reaction! Watch as it rapidly fizzes over the container and make sure you have towels close by to clean up the “lava.”
Here’s a different sort of “recipe” to use Arm & Hammer Baking Soda…a tabletop “volcano!” Try incorporating this with a trip to your local library to check out books about volcanoes and ask your kids to “adopt” a volcano and make a colorful poster about it.
Fun Tabletop Baking Soda Volcano Experiment
What you’ll need
- Baking Soda
- Red colored sugar (optional but adds a nice colorful touch to your “lava”)
- A container to hold everything and avoid a big mess!
- Paper towels or a cloth
- Sprinkle red colored sugar in container
- Place 1/4 cup baking soda into your container.
- Pour in a 1/4 cup of vinegar
- Watch as the reaction takes place!
The baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a base while the vinegar (acetic acid) is an acid. When they react together they form carbonic acid which is very unstable; it instantly breaks apart into water and carbon dioxide, which creates all the fun fizzing action as it escapes the solution.
For extra effect you crafty types can make a realistic looking volcano. Try recycling a container, such as a large plastic yogurt tub, for your volcanic masterpiece and add food coloring to the vinegar for realistic “lava”!
