Handsome Jack, our resident Pedigree dog ambassador

We are definitely dog lovers at our house. We recently went through the heartbreaking process of saying goodbye to our 13-year-old Corgi/German Shepherd mix, Bailey, and now our 11-year-old Akita mix, Jack, is an only “dog child.” Our dogs are truly members of our family!

Pedigree is a brand we are familiar with and trust as we’ve been feeding our dogs Pedigree through the years. I recently teamed up with Pedigree to try the new Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition for Dogs. Over the course of 6 weeks I’ll be transitioning Jack from his old food to his new food with glucosamine. Jack is a “senior” dog now and Pedigree Large Breed formula contains glucosamine, which is great for helping keep his aging joints healthy.

Jack is a rescue dog and was found by my husband more than 10 years ago after he’d been hit by a car and left for dead. He is amazingly fit and agile for his age, but you can see that his old injury bothers him as his back left leg and paw stiffen up when he’s been sleeping. We make sure we walk Jack nearly daily to keep him fit and it’s important to us that he eat the best dog food for his changing needs.

According to Pedigree, dogs have Four Universal Needs when it comes to nutrition. Here is my assessment of Jack’s status on all four paws, I mean needs:

1. Skin & Coat: Jack has a beautiful red coat and I want it to stay that way. His dog sister, Bailey, had considerable dry skin problems as she aged that were a constant battle for us, but so far Jack has not suffered from this. His coat could be shinier, though.
2. Oral Care: Jack’s teeth are in excellent condition for a senior dog! We’ve never fed him wet food so his teeth are in great shape. He could use a little help in the dog fresh breath department, though.
3. Digestion: Jack rarely has digestive problems but occasionally gets an upset stomach and eats grass.
4. Immunity: Jack is a healthy senior dog and we only take him to the vet for his annual check up and shots.

I’ll be posting more about Jack’s new Pedigree dog food and I’m especially interested to see if a food with glucosamine helps ease some of his stiff joint issues.
