My husband suffers from terrible seasonal and household allergies. You name it and he’s probably allergic to it (although thankfully for our two dogs the one thing he is not allergic to is pet dander.) He underwent testing at a local allergy clinic last year and found out that he is especially allergic to dust and mold.
I recently participated in a conference call with allergen expert Dr. Clifford Bassett from Aller-Ease, the No. 1 best-selling brand of protective bedding for allergy and asthma sufferers. Aller-Ease makes a wide range of products such as pillow protectors and zippered mattress protectors. One of the recommendations of my husband’s allergy doctor was to use products such as these so I was happy to try out some of Aller-Ease’s more popular products.
Pillows, especially, can be a breeding ground for all sorts of nasty bed fellows. Aller-Ease carries a full line of pillow protectors and these were my favorite products. Aller-Ease features pillow covers in cotton and microfiber. I prefer cotton, which comes with a microscopic particle barrier, pollen barrier, and pet dander barrier, which is important to me since our large male dog sleeps on the floor in our bedroom.
Products like these are difficult to guage as far as total effectiveness, but I think when combined with other proactive measures around the house (such as laundering your bed sheets in hot water), they provide extra protection against triggers for allergy and asthma sufferers as well as peace of mind. The average bed can contain up to 10 million dust mites and mattresses can double in weight every 10 years due to microscopic allergens that accumulate inside. Now that’s enough to make you have nightmares.
Aller-Ease products are sold nationwide at many retailers, such as Kmart, Sears, WalMart, and Bed, Bath & Beyod.
